Then the angel of God,
who had been traveling in front of Israel's army,
withdrew and went behind them.
The pillar of cloud also moved from in front
and went behind them.
The pillar of cloud also moved from in front
and stood behind them,
coming between the armies of Egypt and Israel.
Throughout the night
the cloud brought darkness to the one side
and light to the other side;
so neither went near the other all night long.
Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea,
and all that night the Lord drove the seas back
with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land.
The waters were divided,
and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground,
with a wall of water on their right
and on their left.
(Exodus 14:19-22)
Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the Lord:
"In Your unfailing love You will lead
the people You have redeemed.
In Your strength You will guide them
to Your holy dwelling.
The Lord will reign for ever and ever."
(Exodus 15:1,13,18)
Then the Lord said to Moses,
"How long will you refuse to keep
My commands and My instructions?
Bear in mind
that the Lord has given you the Sabbath;
that is why on the sixth day
He gives you bread for two days.
Everyone is to stay where he is on the seventh day;
no one is to go out."
(Exodus 16:28-29)
So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered,
and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill.
As long as Moses held up his hands,
the Israelites were winning,
but whenever he lowered his hands,
the Amalekites were winning.
When Moses' hands grew tired,
they took a stone and put it under him
and he sat on it.
Aaron and Hur held his hands up -
one on one side, one on the other -
so that his hands remained steady until sunset.
So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword.
(Exodus 17:10-13)
Jethro was delighted to hear about all the good things
the Lord had done for Israel in rescuing them
from the hand of the Egyptians.
He said, "Praise be to the Lord
Who rescued you from the hand of the
Egyptians and of Pharaoh,
and Who rescued the people
from the hand of the Egyptians.
Now I know that the Lord
is greater than all other gods,
for He did this to those who had treated Israel arrogantly."
