Then the Jews led Jesus from Caiaphas
to the palace of the Roman governor.
By now it was early morning,
and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness
the Jews did not enter the palace;
they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.
(John 18:28)
Wanting to release Jesus,
Pilate appealed to them again.
But they kept shouting,
"Crucify Him! Crucify Him!
(Luke 23:20-21)
The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace
(that is, the Praetorium)
and called together the whole company of soldiers.
They put a purple robe on Him,
then twisted together a crown of thorns
and set it on Him.
And they began to call out to Him,
"Hail, king of the Jews!"
Again and again they struck Him
on the head with a staff
and spit on Him.
Falling on their knees,
they paid homage to Him.
And when they had mocked Him,
they took off the purple robe
and put His own clothes on Him.
Then they led Him out to crucify Him.
(Mark 15:6-20)
And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice,
He gave up His spirit.
At that moment
the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.
The earth shook and the rocks split.
When the centurion
and those with him who were guarding Jesus
saw the earthquake and all that had happened,
they were terrified, and exclaimed,
"Surely He was the Son of God!"
(Matthew 27:50-51,54)
