In the beginning
God created the heavens and the earth.
Now the earth was formless and empty,
darkness was over the surface of the deep,
and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

And God said, "Let there be light,"
and there was light.
God saw that the light was good,
and He separated the light from the darkness.
God called the light "day,"
and the darkness He called "night".

(Genesis 1:1-5)

In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
He was with God in the beginning.

Through Him all things were made;
without Him nothing was made that has been made.
In Him was life,
and that life was the light of men.
The light shines in the darkness,
but the darkness has not understood it.

(John 1:1-5)

From the mere letter
of the Word of the Old Testament
no one would ever discern the fact
that this part of the Word
contains deep secrets of heaven,
and that everything within it
both in general and in particular
bears reference to the Lord, to His heaven,
to the church, to religious belief . . ..
