Create for me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit in the midst of me.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart God doth not despise.
(Psalms 51:10, 17).
In these passages "heart" signifies the good of love,
and "spirit" the truth of faith,
from which a person has spiritual life;
for there are two things that make all of a person's life,
namely, good and truth;
these two when united in a person make his spiritual life.
